Introducing the Sleepycomics.com Originals Store (again)

Aug 04, 2012 04:55 PM | 6
I want everyone to go find 99 cents. Look under your couch, your car seat or your coin jar. The reason for this, is because 99 cents is all you'll need to donate to Sleepycomics.com from now on.

I'm excited to announce, that the Sleepycomics.com Originals Store is officially open for beta testing. I have one item up for sale: a pretty cool drawing of Supergirl getting the cloth (the preview doesn't show it. The drawing has a second part.)
The drawing only costs 99 cents (USD). You pay via PayPal, and if all works correctly, you should get an e-mail immediately with the download link.

The purpose of the beta test is to make sure the system runs smoothly. It's also a chance to get some feedback from you guys on how I can improve this. If this test is a success, then I will continue posting new works for sale every week.

I'm doing this to raise money for Sleepycomics.com. I don't expect to make a living from selling this art. After fees, I only get to keep about 89 cents per sale.

I think this store will be a fun way for you to contribute to Sleepycomics.com, while getting cool sleepy art in return!

The idea for this store came about during last month's donation campaign. I noticed that people were more willing to donate if they got free artwork in return.

Anyway, I am really excited about this new feature and I hope it's a success. Thank you in advance if you make a purchase from the store.

If you have any ideas for improving the store, e-mail me at [email protected]!
You can reach the store by visiting:

Why do we hide?

Aug 07, 2012 06:04 PM | 16
Running this site for six years and talking to lots of sleepy enthusiasts has taught me a lot about our community. Today I want to talk about one aspect of our community I think we all have in common: keeping our fetish a secret.

Why do we hide? What are we ashamed about?

Let me tell you my story. I've had this sleepy fetish almost my whole life. It's an ingrained part of who I am. And I think like all sexual interests, having this sleepy interest was not a choice for me.
Even when I was a kid, I had an understanding that liking sleeping gas KO scenes was not normal. I would browse the early sleepy sites in secrecy, deleting my history and all that. I was constantly looking over my shoulder in case a family member would catch me in the act.

I wasn't even looking at pornography. What interested me was comic book and cartoon KO scenes. The stuff I viewed had no sex or nudity...yet I still hid my activities.

The first person I ever told was my brother. He was asking a lot of questions, and I was bad at hiding all my activities. I was launching my website and I couldn't keep it a secret any longer. So I showed him, and I definitely blew his mind!
An interesting thing happened though. He didn't shun me, or laugh at me. He just sort of...accepted it and moved on! I even try showing him my artwork, and he doesn't even care enough to look at it.

That's when I learned an interesting truth about life: most people don't really care about your life and your interests.

But I also think we as humans have a need to appear normal...to fit in with society. I think that's why we still hide our secret.
Look at the Colorado man who killed 12 people in a theater. The first thing the media pointed out, was how introverted and different he was from the rest of society. The message is clear: being different is bad.

That perception needs to change. I want to change it. And I think it is changing. I mean, 20 years ago if you said you were gay, you would have been received much more negatively by society. Today, we are successfully pushing gay marriage legislation through...even our President supports it. In addition to that, people are starting to recognize that other sexual identities should be accepted by society as well.

So with that, what are some things we can do to change perceptions?

  • Embrace your interest - don't think of it as a curse. Learn to think about it in positive ways.

  • Educate people - if people find out, don't hide! Confidently tell them that this is your identity and that there is nothing to be ashamed about. Chances are, they are into something weird as well.

That being said...for some reason, I still don't tell people! But they don't ask, so it's okay :-)

Tell me what you think! What are your reasons for keeping your sleepy fetish a secret?

PS: The Sleepycomics.com Originals Store is working like I expected. 8 people have purchased the drawing so far. I think "Supergirl Chloroformed" is a really cool piece of art and for just 99 cents you can see it today!

Buy my art....please?

Aug 11, 2012 05:16 PM | 7
So the Sleepycomics.com Originals Store is doing great! The digital delivery system worked like I expected. I also got 12 nice people to buy the Supergirl Chloroformed piece from me. Thanks guys!

I got another great piece for sale: it's Dejah Thoris this week!

You can already see in the preview that she has been chloroformed. For just 99 cents, you can see the full piece!

I put my heart and soul into each and every one of my Sleepycomics.com Originals pieces. You are seeing without a doubt, the best art that I've ever produced. And it's just going to get better!
Selling my art for 99 cents has put me in a totally different mentality. It has caused me to focus on producing really high quality works, because I have paying customers now. So what you are seeing for sale in my store is commission level quality art. It's well worth it, trust me!

I haven't seen any artist on deviantArt attempt to do what I am doing on my site. It's a crazy idea, paying for artwork, I know. I know there is a lot of free content you can consume. But I think I offer something really unique that is really hard to find elsewhere.

I'm also aware that I am not the greatest artist out there. So try to have some fun with this! If you don't like the piece, it only cost you a 99 cent donation to Sleepycomics.com. But if you like the art, it'll make you feel really good!

So thank you again in advance if you make a purchase. And thanks for supporting this site!

It's Official: bondage is more popular at Sleepycomics.com

Aug 15, 2012 10:05 PM | 14
My new weekly art is almost done. Just have to color it and it should be good for release this weekend. I still have two great pieces of art that you can purchase in the meantime! I don't intend to ever release those works for free, so get them while they are available.

I've noticed a very interesting trend over this last year. Scenes with bondage are more popular than sleepy scenes. By a large margin too. Like, even scenes which don't have kO's, just bondage, rank higher on average.

The top three categories (in order), based on page views, are: Gagged, Bondage and Chloroform.

When I started Sleepycomics.com, it was purely sleepy fetish related content. I didn't care at all about bondage. Now, it's a huge part of the collection.
I mean, it makes sense I suppose. Bondage is a way more mainstream fetish. Look at how many bondage artists there are on deviantArt compared to sleepy fetish ones. We are a rare breed indeed.

Sleepycomics.com has in a way, evolved beyond it's original purpose. We now operate one of the largest bondage content databases on the internet.

But I do not want sleepy enthusiasts to get worried! Sleepycomics.com is still focused primarily on sleepy and KO scenes. It's just that, if I come across a good bondage scene, I am still definitely saving it. And having a comprehensive and searchable database of bondage scenes is really valuable.

So what do you guys think about the popularity of bondage on Sleepycomics.com? Share your thoughts!

Server issues caused a nearly 8 hour downtime.

Aug 19, 2012 12:00 AM | 6
What a stressful day. I was monitoring the site when suddenly the home directory was inaccessible. Then I couldn't log in. Then my host was saying I didn't have files and databases anymore. Very very stressful, I was extremely angry. Luckily I have regular backups of all our images and data, but even then, it's a lot of work to get everything running again. We're good now.

This is a reminder that data backups are really important. I take daily snapshots of our database, and monthly backups of the images. I keep a copy of all the data in a key chain around my neck. I am that paranoid!

Anyway, I have some new art out. Please contribute to the site by making a purchase in the store! If I can raise enough monthly funds through donations, it'll allow me to confidently upgrade to better servers. That would mean faster load times and less downtimes.

If I can raise $40 per month consistently, I could easily upgrade to a more reliable server.

So support the site in whatever way you can. We're back online!

Note: In the future, if I am ever down, check my Twitter account @sleepycomics. I will post status updates there.

Sleepy Comics thrives because of you!

Aug 22, 2012 09:25 PM | 3
Look at the scenes featured on the front page. Notice anything? The majority of them were contributed by you guys! Gytalf, clone, gilslug...did I forget anyone? You guys have really taken a load off of me. User uploaded scenes allow me to take a break and work on my art.

Don't get me wrong, I am still searching for scenes daily. But sometimes you guys post stuff faster than me!

User uploaded scenes constitute 1,855 of the scenes in our database. That is a huge chunk! It all started years ago when I had the idea to allow users to add scenes to the database. It has obviously been a huge success!

I can't stress how important user contributions have been. It really does save me time, and saving me time is like donating money to the website.

Speaking of donations - WOW! - there was a surge in sales at the Sleepycomics.com Store after I released the Daphne Chloroformed piece. Thank you all who made a purchase!
There are now three great pieces of art for sale (with a fourth one in the works). If you haven't purchased one yet, I encourage you to do so! It's basically pocket change, and you are supporting a great website. Even if you bought all three images, it amounts to about $2.97 spent. And that's in addition to all 7,200+ scenes you are getting for free.

So support Sleepycomics.com today! It will make you feel good :-)

Hypothetical question: could Sleepycomics.com fund my life?

Aug 25, 2012 08:43 AM | 15
Update: Hey everyone! My art for this week is ready! Managed to finish it tonight. It took longer than I expected, because I have two panels in it. Vampirella is the subject this week. It's a pretty good piece, with chloroform and bondage in it. You'll like it!

Today's post is about a pretty sensitive subject, but I'll try to approach it in the best way possible. In a previous post, I talked about how I really have two jobs: my full-time corporate job and running Sleepycomics.com. This corporate job is, for lack of a better word, a waste of my precious time. I don't provide any value to society, and it is slowly draining away my short time on this Earth.

Sleepycomics.com however, provides a tangible benefit to society...albeit, a very small segment of society. It provides a source of information and content that used to be really hard to find.

I believe there is potential in making Sleepycomics.com even better. The only thing I don't have, is time. I spend 9 hours every day at work. That's 9 hours of my life that is not spent producing original content, finding content and improving the site.

So why don't I just quit my job? Because I am a human being! I am a citizen of the United States, just like a lot of you. I have to pay rent, health insurance and taxes, just like a lot of you. I will die one day, just like everyone else.

With that said, let's do some interesting math. Once you see the numbers, you'll understand where I am coming from.

  • Sleepycomics.com gets about 27,000 unique visitors a month. That's 27,000 different people.

  • About 1,500-1,700 individuals visit the site regularly.

  • The median income in the United States is about $44,000. Let's be conservative, and say I need $36,000 a year (I live very frugally).

  • In order to generate $3,000 a month, 1,000 Sleepycomics.com fans would have to pay $3 a month.

I know there's more than 1,000 people in the world who value this site. The question then is, is Sleepycomics.com worth $3 a month? That's like purchasing three 99 cent drawings a month.

It can be a tough question, and I can understand any apprehension. Money is very tight these days. I just want to assure you that there is no way I will ever get rich off this. It's frankly impossible. In the best case scenario, I would be living as part of America's lower income class. And honestly? I am okay with that. I love working on this site very much.

And I also want to assure you that I am not turning Sleepycomics.com into a pay site. It's illegal anyway (copyright issues).

I just wanted to open the question up for discussion.

I am a human being. I will die one day. How much is Sleepycomics.com worth to you?

In the meantime though, nothing is changing. I will continue running the site like usual. New art should be for sale shortly.

E-mail me at [email protected] if you have thoughts and questions!

Thank you!

Should Sleepycomics.com become a company?

Aug 27, 2012 08:15 PM | 7
Hey sleepy fans! We now have four great pieces of art for sale in the store. If you haven't purchased a drawing yet, I encourage you to do so! They are really cool drawings and you will be supporting an awesome website.

Following up on my previous post, where I discussed if Sleepycomics.com could fund my life, I began wondering if Sleepycomics.com could actually become a company.

If anyone here is a lawyer or accountant, maybe you could answer this?

Right now, I technically operate Sleepycomics.com as a sole proprietorship. This is basically a one man business, where I assume all liability and there is no distinction between myself and the company. Sound complicated yet?

Revenues right now are extremely low. If you include all store sales and donations, yearly revenues are probably in the low hundreds. Expenses are also pretty constant, which is basically just paying for hosting. If revenues ever get really high, it might make sense to form what is called an LLC, a Limited Liability Company. That's so that if Marvel Comics ever sues me, I won't lose my life savings!

Sleepycomics.com also has assets! We own databases, source code, images, original drawings and a cool domain name. It's actually possible to put a monetary value on all those assets, but I don't really know how. Then there's goodwill, which includes all the work I put in over the years and the reputation I've built up.

So the question is, does Sleepycomics.com have what it takes to become a real company? My basic mission statement would be to provide sleepy entertainment to people, in the form of original content and blog posts. I could even hire people to produce content for the site!

It's a really complex question, with no real answer. It's something fun to think about! Maybe we can even IPO one day!

To the users who haven't purchased art yet: why?

Aug 29, 2012 06:04 PM | 23
I'm not here to shame anybody, I promise! I am actually really happy at how well the store is doing. Having over 50 purchases in a month is good news no matter how you spin it.

But as I've mentioned before, Sleepycomics.com gets over 1,500 different users every day! In the online space, we are a force to be reckoned with. Many sites would kill for the kind of traffic we get.

99% of you haven't bought something from the Sleepycomics.com store yet. That's totally cool. Please trust me, I am not offended at all by this. What I want to do is understand your guys' mentality.

For those 99% of you that haven't made a purchase, why not? Is it because of one of the following reasons?:

  • You don't think the art is worth the cost.

  • You are not interested in the art.

  • You think art should be free.

  • You are trying to save money.

  • You are waiting for someone to pirate the art.

  • You haven't seen a character you like yet.

  • You prefer XYZ fetish instead of what I draw.

  • You can't pay via PayPal.

Give me feedback guys. Increasing sales is my number one goal right now. Tell me what you would pay money for, and I will create it.

Feel free to e-mail me privately at [email protected] too!

Thanks guys!

Ideas for store content - here is your chance!

Aug 31, 2012 09:59 AM | 24
Hey guys, I really liked the feedback you gave me in the previous post. It does help! I'm currently working on a new piece that should be ready soon.

This post is going to be really short. Basically, I want you to tell me specifically what kind of art you'd like to see. E-mail me at [email protected] or leave a comment. Tell me what characters you like and what kind of scenes you like. This is your chance to let your ideas all out! I will use this information to better tailor my artwork. The whole idea is to make content that people want to purchase.

Just a disclaimer though, these are NOT art requests.

For reference, here is a list of the top 10 most viewed damsels on Sleepycomics.com (based on pageviews):

  1. Wonder Woman

  2. Supergirl

  3. Black Canary

  4. Batgirl

  5. Zatanna

  6. Catwoman

  7. Wonder Girl

  8. Red Sonja

  9. Black Widow

  10. Vampirella

Give me more feedback guys. Thanks!
